We met Oscar and learned about the boy’s wish for a better education through our board member, Adrina Mariki. As a part of her work for the Tanzanian Broadcast Corporation, she creates short documentaries about diverse subjects.
A NGO came to her with a plea to raise awareness about orphan children and the conditions some of them are in. Lack of education, child labor and abuse were all brought to the surface. She was introduced to Oscar, an orphan from Dar Es Salaam and his aunt who was taking care of him. At 12 years old, Oscar’s only wish was to leave the streets and the goat labor behind, get books and continue his education. [Watch the short video above]
Better Education – Oscar and his new life in a boarding school
Adrina continued the investigation work into Oscar’s conditions and extended family – there was no good future in sight for him. With the unanimous approval of our Sure Wave Foundation Tanzania board members, we decided to look for a boarding school. We found a secondary school In Arusha – primarily in English, The Winning Spirit.
Benson and Adrina both worked tirelessly to get all the forms in order as well as buy new clothes and all the required school supplies. The school is in Arusha, Tanzania where our chairman, Benson Mariki lives, so this gives us good access to watch over Oscar and ensure his wellbeing.
Getting Oscar to an English primary boarding school
Although we didn’t even have our registration certificate for the NGO yet, we decided that getting Oscar out of that environment and into school as quickly as possible was imperative. We all worked together to make it happen.
The first donations came into Sure Wave Foundation in April. By May, we were able to pay for everything Oscar needed and put him into a boarding school. There he was able to get his new uniforms and the health insurance for the year as well.

Oscar finished first school term
To follow up, are happy to say that Oscar finished his first term at The Winning Spirit boarding school a few at the end of July. He is now spending his summer break with Benson at the Green House Hostel – Benson’s primary business. Oscar is also helping with the kids and volunteers at the Christ Hope Orphanage and learning more English. Also, he is happy to be in a quiet family environment.
I’m so happy that Sure Wave Foundation has been able to sponsor Oscar’s schooling and that he is truly so grateful!
