ARUSHA, TANZANIA
Program Overview:
Schools in Arusha and Mwanza are overcrowded, with up to 100 students per teacher. By volunteering in classrooms, you’ll give kids the individual attention they need to master English, math, and critical thinking skills—keys to escaping poverty.
Why We Do This:
Goal 4: Support overworked teachers with lesson planning.
Goal 1: Reduce student-teacher ratios for better learning outcomes.
Goal 2: Inspire creativity through sports, art, and music.
Goal 3: Equip students with English skills for future opportunities.
What You’ll Do Daily
Morning: Teach English grammar or math to primary students.
Midday: Play jump rope or soccer during recess.
Afternoon: Tutor teens in science or computer basics (if laptops are available).
Evening: Plan interactive lessons (e.g., using songs to teach verbs).

Human-Centered Tips
Use Visual Aids: Flashcards or drawings bridge language gaps.
Be Silly: Kids love volunteers who dance or make funny voices!
Stay Flexible: Power cuts? Turn it into a storytelling hour.
What to Expect:
- Classroom Dynamics: Crowded classes (up to 100 students). Volunteers assist local teachers or lead small groups. Creativity is encouraged—bring flashcards or organize sports clubs.
- Language Barriers: English is taught in secondary schools, but younger students may struggle. Swahili basics help bridge gaps.
- School Calendar: Schools operate year-round, but exam periods (June, December) may reduce student numbers. Flexibility is key.
- Orientation: Includes Swahili lessons and safety guidelines. Volunteers receive 24/7 local support.
- Weekend Adventures: Safaris in Serengeti, hikes on Mount Meru, or trips to Zanzibar.
OTHER FEATURED PROGRAM
Orphanage Support Volunteering
Many children in Arusha’s orphanages have faced loss or hardship. Spend afternoons helping with homework, drawing pictures, or sharing stories. Sometimes, just showing up tells them they matter.
