If you think your kids grow quickly out of clothes, imagine having 47 of them. Clothes and shoes are always a much welcomed donation for children in African Orphanages.
Next time you go on an African Safari, consider taking that extra suitcase with lightly used clothes and we can help you donate it! I found out, only days before my first trip to Tanzania, that 47 children ages 5-15 were in need of clothing. [Sonia Miller-Founder CEO] Once I got the word out, help came quickly from many friends.
It also came from an unexpected place. I had worked locally, in Las Vegas, with the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation for over 16 years. When Covid hit, the kids could not go to the place they love most, Camp Cartwheel.
So all the shirts, already printed, were just sitting in boxes. Jeff, the CEO of NVCCF and Stephanie, the VP immediately said – come fill your suitcases! The children of Christ Hope Orphanage loved having new t-shirts!
Clothes for Children in African Orphanages
Friends quickly stepped in to donate two large suitcases, one of them, from Mary Sue, filled already with clothes from her children. We also bought a few additional items. Mainly, SPF clothing for an albino boy that lives at the orphanage I was going to volunteer at.
Women that give birth to albino children are also marginalized. Without a husband and in a country that is not favorable to women independence, some have no choice but to put their children in orphanages.
During first week of volunteering, it was quickly evident that many more things were needed. People donate more girl clothes than boys.
On the 3rd day, after the 5-8 year olds were given a shower (a hose in the courtyard), there were simply not enough pants for the boys. This immediately prompted a trip to a second hand market the next day and the purchase of an additional 27 pairs of pants.
New shoes for the kids!
Shoes are also a hot commodity for children in African orphanages. After watching the kids walk around on gravel barefoot, for 3 days, we decided to go buy shoes. Easy to wear and wash, crocs were their first choice. The staff was happy with new ones too.
Where do donations go?
All the donations made through Sure Wave Foundation go directly to ensure the kids have everything they need. Food, clothing, shelter and a good education. More than that, we make sure they always have support and love from the adults around them.
